Four people were quarantined in Bwayi, Trans Nzoia County over suspected Marburg infection. Their blood samples were sent to Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for further evaluation.

The origin of the disease was traced to the Kween district that borders Uganda and Kenya.

TUKO.co.ke has received information of three confirmed deaths in Kween- two brothers and a sister.

The World Health Organization has ranked the Marburg virus disease as one of the most virulent pathogens known to infect humans.

Marburg is a disease in the same family as Ebola and causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever to its victim.

Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Fatal cases have reported bleeding from multiple areas.

Patients appear to be inexpressive with “ghost-like” faces and deep-set eyes exhibiting zombie like tendencies.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is working in conjunction with Kenyan and Ugandan authorities to contain the outbreak. Currently there are no cures for the lethal infection.

Bats and primates can also transmit the disease to humans making it more difficult to isolate.

Uganda is no stranger to the deadly disease as several outbreaks have been reported in the last few decades.
